Mike Humphries-The winning entry was in another league compared to the rest of the entries. It was very good, and it's even more impressive that it was cut in an hour. All the shots were placed intelligently.

There were nice, subtle, emotional edits. For example, after her dad is revealed, there is the edit of her giggling. I liked the ponytail shot when the reporter is talking about her father's perspective. The last shot of her ending a match, pushing her hair off her face and smiling is a nice way to end it. This is a good example of finding the nice moments and really putting them to work for the story.  The pacing was good, and the natural sound was not distracting.

"It's for Molly" had a good range of focal lengths, nice pacing of natural sound and a good beginning and ending.

"The Gas Man" had a nice transition from the gas station to biodeisel with a tight shot of the hand crank. I liked the shot selection of the last track, like the shot of the tail pipe for "clean burning." It wasn't distracting, so I could focus on what the reporter was saying. Covering the bites at the top with an opening sequence was nice as well.

Some of these stories had an excessive use of tight shots that didn't really advance the story. Also, some of the shots chosen didn't support what the reporter was saying and some effects were not appropriate.

Stephanie Ottjepka-1st place,"Just Another Wrestler," was a very well-edited piece about a female wrestler whose coach also happens to be her father. Great natural sound and shot selection throughout helped to make this piece feel tight and crisp. Great pacing and a great job overall.
 
"It's for Molly" moved along nicely as well. This story about a charity car wash for a recently injured high school girl also contained great natural sound and good shot selection. The editor smoothly blended those elements to make a seamless, well-paced story.
 
"The Gas Man" illustrated one man's effort to cope with rising fuel prices. Though lacking in video opportunities compared to the other winning entries, this editor used natural sound and good shot variety to skillfully tell the story. A very solid effort.
 
Overall, this category was somewhat lackluster. The three stories that placed, clearly stood out above the rest. The other pieces in the group did not show the same attention to detail as the winners, with some inconsistencies in natural sound levels, rough-sounding natural sound breaks, and weak endings.
