Deadline Photography

Everyone should really look at this category.  It is designed to recognize the work that  most of us do on a day to day basis.  A quick turn.

Whether it's a package, or a live shot, or any combination, this category is designed with the general photographer in mind.

A Spot News or General News story that was shot, edited, and broadcast within a 4-hour window.  The goal of this category is to highlight television photojournalism under deadline pressure.

The entry maybe a stand alone package, a straight live shot, or a live shot with video tape.  If the entry includes a live shot, the air check presentation must be submitted with no re-editing allowed.  As a consequence, mention of the photojournalist is permitted in Deadline Photogpraphy entries.

90% of the video & live shot must have been shot by the entering photojournalist.  Max. length is 5 minutes.

Jay Korff-These winners were able to create cohesive, compelling and entertaining stories in half the time most crews get. These photojournalists proved that a lot can be accomplished in a short period of time.

Joel Eagle-Four hours doesn't give one much time to turn a story, but there were several stories here that did it with style. The winner took a routine flooding story and made it memorable. Good natural sound, nice visual images, and personality!!!

Regina McCombs-The winning stories each had good pictures, nice moments and creative approaches to what could have been very standard coverage -- not easy things to achieve on a tight deadline. Despite the fact that live shots were allowed in this category this year, we didn’t see any that were interesting or creative.

Mike Humphries-Comments to come.

Erica Simpson-First place was well put together with great use of natural sound. Good choice of bites and excellent timing to add humor.

Mark Morache-This category was wide open. There were a lot of standard news stories that looked more like regular news than award winners. The first place winner told a nice story with steady shots, good sound, thoughtful editing, good surprises and a nice natural rhythm. It's a good four hour turn. We saw a lot of stories that could have been so much better if they had simply shot sequences, kept their shots clean and clear of distractions, and found a compelling personal center to the story.
